Episode #3 (David Nieslanik) Perspective

We welcome national award winning teacher and principal David Nieslanik to the show. David taught social studies for many years, was an activities director like myself, and is now a high school principal, and a pretty darn good one if you ask me. Nieslanik resides in Beaverton Oregon with his Wife Lisa and has two daughters, Paige and Mahaila who are out tackling this world as well. David is here to talk with us all about the great tool of perspective.

Let's start with a little game called “would you rather?”

  • Eat a blended Big Mac or perform the gallon milk challenge (knowing you will throw-up)?
  • Would you rather randomly time travel +/- 20 years every time you fart or teleport to a different place on earth (on land, not water) every time you sneeze?
  • Would you rather only be to use a fork (no spoon) or only be able to use a spoon (no fork)?
  • Lose the ability to read or the ability to speak?

Tell us a little bit about yourself and your journey to being an amazing educator and school leader?

Perspective- gaining understanding about how this world works (humility required)

Perspective enables us all to see and understand what must happen in order to reach goals

As a boss, vision and focus is one of the greatest things you can give the people that work with you (you team).

Ego- (Rick Rigsby)- EGO IS THE ANESTHESIA THAT DEADENS THE PAIN OF STUPIDITY

3 ways to develop perspective (Habitudes- Tim Elmore)

  1. Take time to fully understand the full picture of your current reality in a situation so you can manage by fact.
  2. Think through both the short term and long term needs.
  3. Ask for input from a variety of sources.

Five Points on Perspective (Psychology Today- David W. Johnson):

  • We all have a unique perspective, no two people will see a situation or issue exactly the same.
  • A person’s perspective is often experienced based, people tend to see only what their perspective allows them to see. (To change someone’s perspective you would change the way that person interprets the events in his or her life).
  • People’s perspective can change over time. As your job role, experiences, assumptions, physiological states, and values change, your perspective will change. (i.e. hungry- see food).
  • One message can mean two entirely different things from two entirely different perspectives. (two interpretations)
  • Misunderstandings often occur because we make assumptions that others see things from the same perspective as we do (everyone loves dogs).

The “Being” Lens

  • Who am I? Your why?
  • Where am I? Where can I make an impact?
  • Whose am I? Who am I working for?

Moment of Gratitude- “Who or what in your life is worthy of some recognition?”

About the Podcast

with joe traeger
A podcast that discusses the ideal characteristics that we all are inspired by and respect. There are people all around us that live life in a way that shows us they have truly captured something special in their character. How did they capture it? We will investigate how we all can capture valuable fundamentals of life by using the umbrellas of c.a.p.t.u.r.e-it to have these conversations under. The umbrellas of c.a.p.t.u.r.e-it represent courage, attitude, perspective, truth, uniqueness, recognition, and empathy. The "it" of c.a.p.t.u.r.e-it is a reminder that we should always be working "in-time" to continuously grow, build, and reinforce the traits we want for ourselves while developing into the person we are proud to be.
