    Leigh Brown-Holmes (Empathy & Inclusion)

    A Letter From Leigh:
The Ghandi quote, "Be the change you'd like to see in the world" is a quote that not only resonates deeply with me, but one that has guided my practice and professionalism for as long as I can remember. I have always had the heart for teaching and knew that message of change would unfold through my love of learning, growing, and supporting youth.
I have been very fortunate in my life to get paid for work that fills my soul, and I feel very thankful to have the opportunity to work with and support our amazing scholars as they rise into their independence and adulthood.
Today, I am not only am a teacher, I am an active advocate of social change, especially around supporting growth in how we teach and support our scholars with disabilities. Simply put...we all deserve a right to an equal education that meets us where we are. We all deserve an opportunity for employment that doesn't pay below minimum wage and matches our skillsets. We all deserve to be treated with respect and dignity regardless of our abilities. My hope for our community is to continue to challenge the stereotypes and boxes put on people with disabilities and instead promote inclusion and acceptance of all ability levels.
Be that change my friends! Spread acceptance! Spread love! Spread awareness!

Angela Duckworth (Book- Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance)
The secret to outstanding achievement is not talent but grit: a special blend of passion and persistence.     Grit is about having passion and perseverance for long-term goals.Gritty people are able to maintain their determination and motivation over long periods despite experiences with failure and adversity.
    The Five Big Ideas
Grit is about holding the same top-level goal for a very long time. (A top-level goal is your ultimate concern, a compass that gives direction and meaning to all the goals below it.)Paragons of grit have four psychological assets: (1) interest (2) practice (3) purpose (4) hope.Gritty people do more deliberate practice and experience more flow. For paragons of grit, the long days and evenings of toil, the setbacks and disappointments, and struggle, the sacrifice—all this is worth it because, ultimately, their efforts pay dividends to other people.Often, the critical gritty-or-not decisions we make are a matter of identity more than anything else.

One episode listener so far....

Always always great to here from John Kuppenbender. We were spoiled to have him as a teacher in high-school. He left an impact on many lives, made teaching fun and learning exciting by keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering what kind of craziness would happen that day in class. Would today be the day where you would wear the weight of the world on your shoulders? It would be nice to hear from him annually.

Listen and Learn

The nice guy who is a great educator is a thinker and “lifelong” learner. This podcast is a must for educators to hear from a colleague, about school and beyond. For non educators, do you wonder who the amazing teachers are that are shaping our future? Enjoy this podcast. Listen and learn, for enjoyment and for wisdom.
